Which Woodworking Software Is Best For You?

Getting into the hobby of woodworking will be much smoother with the proper woodworking software. If you can find the best software to use then you will notice that your projects are so much easier to accomplish, you will need to invest some time to get the best software. Just keep in mind that the benefits far outweigh the effort to find the software, such as increased self-confidence and skill.

You are going to want to look at a few key points when you are shopping around for your woodworking software to be certain that you are getting the best program for your needs. For instance, you want to be sure that you know the number of templates that you can find in your software. Are you going to be able to use the templates over and over, on different projects?

It is also critical to find woodworking software that has complete instructions for you so that you will not be confused. Some software does not have total instructions included and are vague, but armed with the proper software you should do fine. You will have no reason to become stuck at any point and will enjoy woodworking.

One very helpful tactic to find the best woodworking software is to look at the reviews from other customers that have used it. Try to find a program that comes with a high referral rating from other customers who have used it. If it is a good package with a history of happy clients then you can trust that your experience will be the same. Otherwise you are taking a chance that you will be unhappy with it.

Try to find woodworking software that can help you at your current skill level, but that can take you to the next level. Do yourself a favor and find software that will not just leave you in your comfort zone, but will give you a challenge as well. The best programs will help you to improve yourself. This way you will be able to grow in experience and will complete projects that are more fulfilling.

The woodworking software that you want will give you great instructions from your own computer. Look at the guide when you get stuck some place, and you will have the ability to complete every project that you set out to do. Woodworking should not become frustrating for you. You should enjoy yourself and having good software will help you do so.

Gifts For Woodturners: Things to Consider Before Buying That Present

Your spouse, relative, neighbor or friend is a woodturner, and you are thinking of getting him or her something related to that interest. Getting them a fancy chunk of wood (called a "blank") or a new tool or kit seems like an obvious choice. But before buying that present, here are a few things to consider before getting gifts for woodturners.

What do they turn?

Most turners tend to do one type of turning more than others. For example, some prefer doing spindle turning, making things like chair legs, baseball bats, boxes, or eggs. Others prefer bowls, bowls, bowls. Some do mostly hollow forms, such as vases, urns, and vessels.

Buying a pen kit for a turner who does pens might be ideal, but it wouldn't work for a bowl turner. You actually need special equipment to make pens, so unless you are sure the person has everything else they'd need, and that they'd actually turn it, it's best to skip the pen kit.

How big is their lathe?

Lathes come in several different sizes, from mini lathes, to heavy iron monstrosities. The "swing" is the measurement of the largest diameter piece of wood any particular lathe can accommodate.

A mini lathe has a swing of about 12 inches, and other larger lathes can handle 14, 16 inches, or more. If you get a wood blank for them to turn, you'll need to know what size they can handle.

What is their skill level?

Beginning turners have many failures. My goal, as a beginner, was always, "a finished piece, not a masterpiece." So spending money on tools that they wouldn't even know what to do with is foolish. So is buying wood blanks that are likely to end up as an expensive pile of shavings.

However, if you know they can do spindle turning and have turned a tool handle, for example, you can assume they have the skills to complete a similar project, such as the handle for a cheese knife or ice cream scoop. One of those kits might be a great gift.

Are they purists?

Many turners start out working with wood only. Eventually they may venture into playing around with embellishments, such as stone or metal inlays, carving, coloring, and burning.

If you know for a fact that your turner friend does these things, you might get them something related. Or present them with a book focused on the type of embellishments they enjoy.

Believe me, nothing is more exciting to a wood turner than a related gift. But make sure you consider these factors, so you give gifts for woodturners that are a good use of your hard earned money, and something they will actually be able to make use of.

Workbenches: From Design And Theory To Construction And Use (Popular Woodworking)

Workbenches: From Design And Theory To Construction And Use (Popular Woodworking)Every workbench should be able to easily work the edges, faces and ends of boards. But most benches built during the last 100 years fail on at least one of these tasks. This book dives deep into the historical records of the 18th and 19th centuries and breathes new life into traditional designs that were fantastic to use. These old-school benches are simpler than modern benches, easier to build and perfect for both power and hand tools. The reader will learn the fundamental rules of good workbench design that have been largely forgotten. The book explains all of the complex vises and ways of holding work so the reader can understand what they do. And it shows you how to use this knowledge to design a workbench any reader will love, using two venerable designs as basic skeletons. Unlike other books on the topic, this one isn't a tour of unusual or beautiful workbenches. Instead it's essential reading for anyone who likes to get their hands dirty in their workshop.

HTC PM7000 Portamate Miter Saw & Power Tool Work Center

HTC PM7000 Portamate Miter Saw & Power Tool Work CenterThere's no denying the immense popularity of the power miter saw. It has pushed the radial-arm saw to the brink of extinction, and become an indispensable tool for professional contractors and do-it-yourselfers alike. However, to get the most out of your power miter saw, you must get it up off the floor and mount it to a sturdy saw stand.

At first glance, the Portamate PM7000 Miter Saw and Power Tool Work Center might just look like a fancy sawhorse, but look closer and you'll discover one of the best portable saw stands on the market. The ruggedly built aluminum stand measures 33 inches tall by 67 inches wide, but it expands to an impressive 9 foot, 8 inches for cutting long moldings, siding or deck boards. The saw attaches to the stand's horizontal rail via a pair of universal mounts. In fact, the mounts can be used to attach other compact benchtop tools, such as a drill press, scroll saw, band saw, or thickness planer.

Other user-friendly features include a four-outlet power strip, 8-inch-diameter wheel for easy mobility, convenient storage compartment and three adjustable work supports that have fold-down rollers. Outdoor Furniture Woodworking Plans - Ready to Have Some Fun?

Patio furniture is truly a joy to build. It's not too complex. It's not too "big." And everyone enjoys the results of your labor! You just can't lose... unless, of course, you're not following a good set of outdoor furniture woodworking plans. But we won't let that happen. This article will help you select the best plans possible, so please read on!

What I would really like to do at this time is offer you a little insight as to what makes some plans highly valuable, while others are really only suited for the recycle bin. This is really common sense stuff, but often that's exactly what we need to help us make the best decisions. Would you agree?

The first thing you really need to scrutinize when it comes to your outdoor furniture woodworking plans is who the heck drew them up in the first place. Was it just some random individual trying to make a quick buck, or someone who actually knows what they're doing? A question I like to have answered before buying any plans is "Does this individual actually use these plans himself (or herself)?" If not, I wouldn't even consider making the purchase.

Another thing I look for is neatness and readability. The last thing you want to have laid out in front of you are plans written in a different language. At the same time, you don't want plans that are too small. They need to be big, bright, and crystal clear. Otherwise, costly mistakes can be made, and the last time I checked, wood can often be pretty unforgiving when it comes to major mistakes!

One more thing to expect from your plans is the inclusion of material lists. In other words, you want to know the exact materials and tools that are required for your project BEFORE you get started... not some time in the middle! Can you imagine the frustration of getting half-way through your project only to realize that you have to make a $200 trip to the hardware store in order to complete it? Not fun.

Finally, even though patio furniture is often thought of as "light" and fairly simple to construct, you really don't want "cheap-o" plans. You can still create breathtaking works of art if you've got the right plans by your side. So don't let your pride stray away on this one. Good outdoor furniture woodworking plans can keep you inspired, and this will show when it comes time to entertain in your back yard... or the outdoor location of your choosing.

Beginning Woodturning - Mounting the Wood

While it is obvious that wood is spun on the wood lathe and then shaped with various hand tools, it is less obvious how to mount the wood on to the lathe in the first place. A bit of observation and common sense can turn this into an easy and safe operation.

Wood is mounted to the lathe in either spindle or faceplate orientation. Spindle turning means the grain of the wood will run parallel to the ground while faceplate implies the grain runs perpendicular to the ground. While there can be variations on this theme, the beginner is advised to follow the scheme until sufficient practise is obtained to change it with safety.

Chair legs and rungs are almost always turned in spindle orientation for reasons of strength. The pieces that join the legs together are often called spindles, hence the use of the term in woodturning.

Most wood lathes come with a spur center for the headstock and a tail center for the tailstock. Each of these has a center point. Many tail centers have ball bearings and turn freely. Spur centers are surrounded by two, three or more spurs that engage the wood. Spindle stock is mounted between these centers. Be sure to place the centers into the appropriate head and tail stocks. Ensure they are seated so that the spurs engage the wood and make it turn. From time to time while turning, tighten the tailstock to keep the spurs working. They will try to bore their way into the wood somewhat like a drill bit.

Again, most wood lathes will come with a faceplate. Like spur and tail centers they are also readily available from a variety of after market suppliers. Just get one that fits the threads on your lathe. The larger the piece of wood that is to be turned, the larger the faceplate that may be required, however, it is rare for most home wood lathes to require a faceplate larger than six inches.

Faceplates are used to turn objects such as bowls, platters, vases and hollow forms. They are mounted to the wood with screws and number fourteen, self tapping, sheet metal screws are advised. These have deep threads that hold the work well and are extremely strong. Usually screws that allow the threads to go three quarter inches deep are sufficient for most turning but longer ones give more security if needed. Be sure that the wood surface to which the faceplate attaches is flat. This gives a great deal of the holding power of the faceplate.

While there are other means of mounting the wood such as dedicated chucks, glue blocks, and four jaw chucks, centers and faceplates will allow the beginning turner to mount wood to the lathe for a great many projects. The old time wood turners used just these to outfit homes and businesses with wood turned essentials and art work.

Darrell Feltmate is a juried wood turner whose web site, Around the Woods, contains detailed information about wood turning for the novice or experienced turner as well as a collection of turnings for your viewing pleasure. You too can learn to turn wood, here is the place to start. Wondering what it looks like? There are many free videos on the site dealing with everything from sharpening to making a bowl.

There are several wood turning projects fully explained on the web site. In particular, a selection of beginner's projects may be found on the Beginner's Projects page complete with explanation and step by step photos.

Woodworking Tools You Absolutely Need For Your Crafts Projects

When you're about to enter the woodworking arena, you might be surprised about the multitude of tools that you can find. Of course, if your budget is unlimited, you can buy them all and you're set for life. However most of us still live on a monthly paycheck, so the budget should be carefully planned. So which woodworking tools should you get to make the best use of your starting out in this wonderful craft and hobby type?

Budget is not the only issue here. Everybody is different and different woodworking projects might need a different set of tools. However, there are some basic tools that most people will usually have at home when interested in woodworking. These tools are used most of the times for most of the projects.

So if you want to start out in woodworking, you need to have most of these tools: hammers and mallets, chisels, measuring tape, sand paper of different grids, drill, nails, wood glue, various clamps, wood square and last but not least, wood pencils.

There might be more than these, however there are the minimum that you should have at home. You don't need to buy them all right now, however in due course you should strive to invest in them with each new project that you start, so that eventually you have a well rounded set of universal woodworking tools that can help you in 90% of your tasks.

When you are looking to buy tools, avoid buying anything else but these at least initially (unless a particular project needs something specific), as you want to avoid frustration due to too many tools and too much clutter. What you need to do is start one project, get the plan done, see exactly which tools that project needs and buy only those.

When it comes to the issue of quantity of tools vs. their quality, I always say that quality should rule. I'd rather buy a mallet that costs $50 and know that it will last for the next 10 years or more, vs one that costs only $20, and will last me only one or two years before it breaks.

Woodworking Projects - 10 Tips for Success

The top 10 rules of woodworking projects are listed below in this article. Read this and remember it and you will save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run.

Don't Be Cheap

I know we all have limited budgets and we don't want to over pay for equipment and materials. Usually however it is worth it to get high quality hand tools and woodworking equipment. Buying low end products usually will end up in disappointment and may cost you more in the long run when you have to continually repurchase those cheap tools over and over.

Take Your Time

Working quickly and rushing usually ends up taking you more time in the long run. We have limited time and sometimes want to rush but take your time. You will only create more mistakes, bad cuts and more trips back and forth to the hardware store. Even worse rushing could lead to serious injuries.

Keep It Sharp

Dull tools don't work well. Learning how to sharpen your equipment it a great skill as sharper tools mean better results

Practice Makes Perfect

Woodworking is a skill, or rather a collection of several skills, that are learned and improved upon over time. I know you've heard it a million times but in wood working it really it true that you should practice, practice, practice. When trying something for the first time grab some scrap pieces and try it out on those before trying it with the perfect piece of wood you have set aside for your woodworking project.

"Finishing" What You Started

If you are like me you get your joy from building the project and are not all that fond of finishing. However the best constructed piece of woodworking will look like junk without a proper finish. This includes taking time to do the sanding and clean up required before staining and finishing your project.

Don't Glue It Until You Checked It

Don't rush and start applying glue to your woodworking projects until you do a "dry-fit". This will help you decide what parts to put together first, where you should put clamps and which clamps to use all with out trying to rush through before the glue starts drying up.

Glue Can't Correct a Bad Fit

If you have a sloppy made joint don't think you can use some glue to make it look better by filling in the gaps. Don't let being lazy cause you more problems in the long run.

There is No Swiss Army Knife

The fact is woodworking requires many different tools, some of which do similar types of jobs. Using the right tool for the right job will save you time and effort. You may have several different types of saws but don't one that is not designed for the job you are doing.

Use Your Hands and Your Tools

No woodworking job can be completed using only your bare hands and no project can be completed using only tools. To be an effective woodworker you need to know how to use not just your hand tools, but also your hands.

Keep It Clean

If you can get into the habit of cleaning up as you go your workshop will not get messy. This avoids you having to stop and do a general cleaning because every work area in your shop is covered with something. Getting a new tool out? Is there one you can put away at the same time?

Artistic Woodturning - Creating Beautiful and Original Masterpieces From Natural Wood

Some of the most magnificent works, truly artistic in every sense, are created by turning woods of various colors and types. This work is commonly known as artistic woodturning. Woodturning is a process of making, building, or carving something out of wood by the use of a lathe. Artistic woodturning is likened to the evolution of man in a sense that a plain simple wood can be transformed into an amazing, breath-taking sight of beauty. Woodturning artists commonly create bowls, vases and sculptures as their art work, adding intricate details showing off their personal touch which enhances the beauty and uniqueness of the product.

Woodturning as a Hobby

Woodturning has become more and more popular nowadays because this hobby is great fun - it can even become an addiction. While most woodturners have a passion for working with timber of various kinds, this hobby also gives them the opportunity to create things they can use in their everyday lives. And another great advantage of knowing the art of woodturning is being able to create personalized gifts for our loved ones during special occasions. This is a much more effective way of showing love and sincerity than purchasing ready-made gifts at the local store.

Where to Search for Wood?

As mentioned earlier, most woodturners simply have this undeniable love for wood and they have this tendency to search for the most unusual piece of wood, exotic or home grown. They examine every piece critically before using it.

Recognizing and exposing the hidden features that will amplify the beauty of the final piece is simply a source of happiness for them, but damaging a hidden feature during preliminaries, or while turning, can absolutely be disappointing and even heartbreaking. However, many woodturners just want extremely plain, well-seasoned timber, which contains no obvious features or imperfections.

They find this particular type of material very predictable, and it allows them to create and produce flawless and stable products. Generally, no matter what type of material they use, they still find turning really enjoyable whether it be for forming quite simple yet wonderfully flowing artistic shapes or for extra challenging works.

This gives their work more versatility and a wider license to delve into new techniques and ideas. The conception of new ideas, designs, as well as other techniques oftentimes end up being developed from timber that first caused disappointment due to imperfections and flaws. Obtaining perfection in the finished wooded product is quite possible once you have developed the necessary skills. Those who truly have a passion for this art continually strive for perfection, while still enjoying each step along the way.

Respecting the Trees

The respect artistic woodturners have for the beauty, power and contribution trees make to our planet, drive their dedication to bringing the importance and beauty of wood alive in an artistic way. Usually, different themes influence their artwork. Most of them are inspired by the designs of great cultures of the past; Egyptian, Pueblo and oriental, and by the complexity of the human race which produced these cultures.

They support the conservation and the preservation of all nature's materials which led most of them in recycling materials, like trees downed by hurricanes, termite damage and etc., to build products that will last a lifetime. A lot of their art works combine the incredibly varied shapes of nature and mathematical curves which result in the creation of a timeless beauty.

Wood Turners Club

With the seemingly unstoppable boom of woodturning, there are a lot of clubs and organizations which unite all wood turners around the globe. These clubs and organizations allow them to share their works and ideas with one another and often encourage other people to join them in this enjoyable hobby.

Displaying Wood Works of Art in Galleries

Professional woodturners often have their own galleries or websites which showcase all their art works and thus the dedication they have for their passion. Each piece on display is unique, a statement of their commitment to simplicity of design, good craftsmanship and respect for this extraordinary material which is timber.

Man and Wood

The variety, warmth and beauty of timber are unparalleled. Man is often in conflict with nature, but when man and nature collaborate wonderful and amazing things can be achieved. The work of artistic woodturning experts extends from simple forms, where the wood speaks for itself, to complex creations, combining various types of timber and other materials in simple harmonies.

Choosing Woodworking Bookshelf Plans for Novice Carpenters

If you're like a lot of people, you have more books than you do space to put them. In my home, we have walls full of bookshelves, and yet I'm still always looking for space to put more. I've always wished I was a carpenter so that I could build the furniture I want, but I'm still pretty clueless when it comes to building. Maybe you're like me and would like to find woodworking bookshelf plans that you could follow easily even if you haven't yet acquired a lot of skills. You will be able to find dozens of such plans online.

There are a number of things you want to look for when you choose bookshelf plans for a project you intend to do yourself, especially if you're a beginner. You want lists that tell you in detail about the materials you will need to complete the job. You also want a list of every tool you will be required to have. It's far easier to do a job if everything you need is assembled in one place. You can get frustrated if you constantly have to look for a tool or making another trip to the home improvement store to get still another item that you're lacking.

Some plans will show you the pieces of wood you will need to cut and give you the exact dimensions for each piece. Having this information will simplify the job for you enormously, and a good set of plans should supply it for you. The drawings should also be very clear as should the instructions that accompany the plans. We've all been in a spot where we've tried to put something together following instructions that really didn't help us all that much, and you don't want that to happen to you in the middle of a building project. You want step-by-step instructions that will tell you what to do every step of the way.

Building a bookshelf is really one of the easiest types of projects for a novice to try, because most of them have simple, basic lines; however, without a good set of woodworking bookshelf plans, you'll be tackling a job that's may be more than you can handle. Therefore, you want to choose your plans from a reputable company where you know you'll get all that you paid for.

Furniture Woodworking Plans - Get This Right!

If you would like to build yourself a nice sofa, rocking chair, dinette set, bedroom, or any other kind of home or patio furnishings, you are going to need top quality furniture woodworking plans. There is no escaping this fact, unless you're into building pure garbage, which I very seriously doubt. This article will help you find the best plans available to build your furniture correctly the first time.

There are three very important criteria that any set of plans you're considering must meet. Ideally, your plans will meet all three of these criteria at a very high level. Check all the promotional materials associated with a set of plans to make sure that it does. In addition, read reviews from fellow woodworkers who have purchased and used the plans themselves. Amazon.com and Google are the best places to find such reviews.

Here are the 3 criteria your furniture woodworking plans must meet:

1. They must be easy to read and comprehend. If they're too small or cryptic, you could have a real problem.

2. They must be written by a master craftsman. If the creator of your plans wouldn't use them himself, run away!

3. They must be interesting, varied, and top quality. The more plans you can get for your money the better, provided they produce stunning results.

Building furniture can be an absolute joy. Many woodworkers do it so they can take pride in having beautiful, hand crafted pieces adding to the visual flare of their own homes. Others treat it as their profession, making a handsome profit from all of their skillful work. You may fall into one or both of these categories.

Whatever your reason for working with wood, your finished products can only be as good as the plans that were followed. No matter how talented a chef is, if he or she tries making a gluten-free chicken stir-fry using a recipe that calls for ground beef, white flour, and a crock pot... you get the idea.

This actually brings me to another thing you should expect from any furniture woodworking plans worthy of your time and money. They must clearly tell you what materials and tools will be required for each individual project. The less guesswork you are required to do, the better.

Above all, have a blast. Having professionally drawn up plans that meet all of the criteria set forth in this article can help set your mind at ease. And when your mind is at ease, you can work more confidently and joyfully. Next to quality education and basic tools, professional furniture woodworking plans are the most important asset you will ever acquire. Make sure you get it right!

Traditional Woodwork Projects

Woodwork projects should not be taxing and boring, taking up most of your time only to be discarded after a short while. Even the traditional and common woodwork assignments can be transformed slightly to make them slightly more challenging, creative, usable and interesting. There are times that we consider projects which we begin but do not finish because the designs are either too complex to understand or too simple to be interesting. The challenge in picking a project based on woodwork is to keep it interesting while ensuring that it does not consume all your time, and can be easily used. Here are some few tips on how you can transform traditional projects to include your creativity and provide a challenge:

Tables: almost every person who has been in the workshop at one time has embarked on a project to design and build a table. Whereas, tables are easy to build often the projects are discarded because they are not only boring but also not very challenging. So the next time you want to build a table, design and purchase plans for a portable table. A portable table is easily foldable and can be used when you need to entertain outside or for storing items for a short period of time. A portable table saves on space since you can easily take it apart or fold it, if you need to move it to a new location or just store it. A portable table provides the challenge lacking in the normal table.

Chairs: this is another common woodwork project that provides less challenge and is often discarded in favor of much more challenging projects. Chairs are easy to make, but you can also incorporate a bit of creativity by making rocking chairs instead of study ones which are more common. The challenge in making rocking chairs comes when you need to bend the wood precisely. A rocking chair requires precise jointing and measurements to ensure that the strength of the chair is not compromised in favor of the rocking ability.

DVD cases: instead of just producing a wooden piece of case, you can take the time to treat the wood, and carve designs into the edges. This ways the DVD case becomes more aesthetic and adds an ethnic touch to your room. To make the project more challenging you can also add a small lantern above the DVD case to light your DVD's and CD's in the dark. If this design proves complex for you, adding a carved door is enough to make this project slightly different and more fascinating.

To make a woodwork project interesting you do not have to go after complex designs allowing your creativity free flow in the projects makes the project interesting and challenging for you. It also ensures that you produce something you are proud to display and use around your home. Woodwork projects need not be complex and time-consuming in order to be interesting. Creating something you love and find useful is enough.

Woodworking: Five Tips For A Smooth Finish

Many pieces of furniture carefully assembled in hobby workshops across America are less than perfect because the woodworker failed to correct defects in the wood before completing the project. Sanding is one step that, although seemingly small, can make a huge difference in the overall quality of the item. Here are some tips that will help you make the best of what you've got to work with, wood wise.

1) Fix Bruises Before Beginning.

Flat pieces of wood often have indentations where pressure has been applied over a small area. These are known as bruises. If not addressed early in the woodworking project, these dents can spoil an otherwise wonderful piece of work. Just apply some water to the bruised area and let the wood absorb it. This will allow the wood fibers to swell, which will in many cases undo the damage and eliminate the bruise. Sand the area back to an even finish after the wood has completely dried.

2) Keep Sanding When Saw Marks Disappear.

Saw marks and those left by the planer will vanish fairly quickly when you begin sanding, but will reappear when the finish is applied unless you sand beyond that point where you can no longer see them. Sanding a little longer is one way to ensure the finished product will be as beautiful as intended. A little elbow grease now beats ruining your piece later, or living with saw marks where you don't want them.

3) Always Sand With The Grain.

On long flat surfaces, a block of cork or soft wood can be used to apply an even amount of pressure over the length of the piece. Curved surfaces can be sanded by folding a quarter sheet of sandpaper three times. Use only the pressure of your fingers. Remember that the final finish is going to reflect the quality of your sanding, so be thorough and diligent with this step.

4) Sand First, Assemble Second.

Always sand the pieces of your project before they are assembled, especially when a corner is going to be created. It's almost impossible to adequately sand a corner after it has been assembled, so think ahead and sand appropriately along the way.

5) Protect your fingers.

Cut the thumb and first two fingers off of an old pair of lightweight leather gloves, and use the cut off pieces as finger cots. This will allow your hand a full range of finger motion while protecting your nails and skin from becoming sore while using sandpaper or emery cloth.

How Do I Start Woodworking?

If one is not fortunate enough to have been exposed to woodworking through your parents, and you develop an interest in the craft later on, the challenge is - how do I get started? It is a simple question, but there is no single, correct answer. Most seasoned woodworkers advise getting started with books, basic tools, or classes. I personally like using books as a basis and then actually start with building simple projects.

Researching the topic on the internet I found that the most common answer to the question of how to start coincides with my personal preference. Many people recommended starting with easy woodworking books on basic techniques and then gradually building a library to start including more advanced topics. You will therefore start with beginner projects and learn safety practices and the proper use of tools at the same time. These 3 aspects will form a solid foundation from which you can move forward. Focusing on more advanced woodworking topics that are specific to areas that interest you is the next logical step.

If learning from books is not your style, attending woodworking classes at a high school adult education program or local community college is an alternative option. These classes are normally inexpensive (occasionally even free). In this way, you will gain hands-on experience and a solid foundation in safety. Once you have attended these classes, you will be in a position to decide how far you want to go with woodworking and in what direction you want to specialize.

Amassing tools is common advice given to beginners, but the advised approach varies. Some recommend starting with projects that only require hand tools and moving on to power tools later whilst others advocate starting with a table saw because of its versatility. Beginning with pre-cut wood projects that only need assembly with basic hand tools is one approach, but it might be too simple for others. One website I saw recommends beginning by whittling with a lock blade pocketknife. This will teach you about the dangers of working with sharp equipment and also allow you to get a feel for the differences in wood types.

Some of the best advice I gleaned is to only buy tools as you need them. Start by buying only the tools you need for a particular project, and keep buying additional equipment as you need them for more advanced projects. Using this method will gradually increase you tool collection until you end up with a fully equipped workshop. Interestingly, not a single article or book I came across advocates buying the cheapest tools. Some say to start with "middle of the road" quality tools; others advise one only to buy the best.

Which advice you decide to follow will ultimately be a personal choice and will depend on your personality. Your first investment in woodworking will probably be in books, classes, or tools. There is no right or wrong way to begin, but all experienced woodworkers agree it is a rewarding and worthwhile effort. Who know, you might even end up doing an advanced project such as building you own Adirondack chair.

Contemporary Furniture Plans - 3 Things You Had Better Get Right!

There are those people who can "see" the furniture waiting inside the rough wood, and can build a gorgeous piece that is truly a pleasure to behold. Most of us, however, do not possess such amazing skills and will require a set of quality, proven contemporary furniture plans to build that exciting, modern piece of furniture.

It does not matter how old you are or how much skill you possess, this is a fact that cannot be denied. Even if you did design your own furniture from memory, you would be limiting yourself from being able to build from all of the amazing contemporary furniture plans that are available on the market today.

As you look to erect your next work of art, you must take heed of 3 specific and important criteria. These really aren't requests, they're total requirements. If your blueprints are missing even one of these vital necessities, then they simply aren't the right blueprints for you. Keep on searching. That is how important these three requirements are.

Three criteria requirements are outlined here and must be followed:

1. Ensure that the woodworking plans you're using were drawn up by best professionals. Do not depend upon some novice would-be craftsman to manufacture trustworthy plans. It is of the utmost importance that yours are contemporary furniture plans that were created by someone who has used them him or herself. I cannot stress this enough.

2. It's incredibly common-sense, still it's important that I bring it up. These wood plans you're looking at had better be legible. Unless you want a majorly frustrating and hugely costly mistake in your furniture project(s), you must have the ability to actually read and understand your furniture plans. They'd better be large, lucid, and logical. The most commonly misinterpreted information among craftsmen are the numbers 3, 8, and 5. Just pay attention and be careful!

3. They've got to keep your interest. Not only should you choose plans for a piece of furniture that is interesting and/or elaborate, but you should also choose them from a designer that offers a good variety of contemporary furniture plans.

Woodworking is an absolutely incredible hobby (or business) to be involved in. If you are choosing the right types of plans, then your hobby will prove to be enjoyable and will have relatively little stress. Many woodworkers enjoy this hobby because it is challenging while also being truly enjoyable and even relaxing. However, your stress and fun are all dependent upon the designs that you are using for your projects. If you purchase a professional set of well-written plans, you will enjoy building your project much more.

You can start by looking at the three points listed in this article. I can't stress enough how important it is that your plans are of the highest quality. If you expect to construct quality pieces of furniture, then it is of absolute importance, and it makes absolute sense as well, to use only high quality plans. Before you even pick up your hammer or a piece of wood, make sure you have the proper plans to guide your work. Although mentioning tools brings up another valid point.

This leads me to another important item that any high-caliber set of contemporary furniture plans should provide. The plans need to very clearly list the tools and materials that will be needed to complete the project. You don't want to have to waste a lot of time and money guessing.

Nobody wants to experience this when you consider most people get into woodworking as a way of having fun in a practical way. While this is a serious business, this shouldn't remove all of the pleasure you feel from the creative process. All you have to do is keep in mind your reasons for getting involved in woodworking in the first place. With good plans and a relaxed mind you can create absolutely whatever you wish.
